Salary £36,500 – £45,000 dependent upon experience and qualifications
The Submarine Support Management Group (SSMG) Platform Design department provides multi-disciplinary professional and technical support to the MoD submarine platform Design Authorities for all in-service Royal Navy submarines. Within the department, the Structures Design Manager reports directly to the Platform Design Manager and is responsible for managing the Structures Team in the investigation and assessment of design performance and the specification and development of design changes.
The Structures Design Manager is responsible for managing a small team of Naval Architects and Engineers in the delivery of technical tasks associated with submarine structures, nuclear containment and submarine escape, rescue and abandonment on in-service RN submarines. The post holder acts as the professional signatory for Structural / Naval Architecture matters within SSMG. This position is classified a “key post” in the SSMG contract.
The role includes the management / review / acceptance of all technical work, team and resource management, budget control, sub-contractor management, customer liaison and business development. The applicant shall provide a flexible, innovative and adaptable support service. .
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
The applicant will be technically qualified to at least degree level in a Structural / Naval Architecture based discipline. The applicant will be expected to be Chartered, belonging to a relevant professional body, and have significant background and experience in submarine design or operations.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate sound project management skills, technical knowledge and man management skills, be able to communicate competently at all levels, be commercially and contractually aware and self-motivated. Experience of MoD working practices is essential.
